Galilee & North >> Travel Guide

Mountains in the GalileeThe Galilee, the mountainous region in Israel’s north, is divided into two main parts - the Upper Galilee to the north and the Lower Galilee to the south which encompasses  the famous Sea Of Galilee (lake Kinneret), Israel’s largest fresh water reservoir and drinking source.
Relatively low temperatures and high annual rainfall make the Galilee a center of flora and wildlife. Streams and waterfalls (the latter mainly in the Upper Galilee) along with vast fields of greenery and colorful wildflowers make it an ideal destination in israel for those looking to immerse themselves in natures beauty.
Huge flocks of birds also annually migrate from colder climes to Africa and back through the Hulah-Jordan corridor. To witness this is one of lifes great gifts - its a truly breathtaking site to see thousands of birds filling the skies. If you visit the area in the migration season, be sure to pack your binoculars!
The Galilee is an immensely  popular destination for both local and international visitors.  Drawn to the peacefullness and natural beauty of the area,  the feeling is one of truly 'getting away from it all'.
Having said that, the Galilee offers an enormous variety of activities and accommodation choices making it a first class tourism centre: There is an endless choice of nature parks and walks, as well as horseriding and a full range of water sports. Cruises, fishing, watersking, jet ski, canoeing, sailing
and a number of water parks scattered around the lake, with giant slides (Luna Gal, Tsemakh or Gai Beach) are all available.
The Sea of GalileeThe Sea Of Galilee boasts a fantastic choice beaches, many offer shady family camping areas . There are also hostels, guest houses and beachfront hotels for those wanting to be close to the waters edge. If the hills overlooking the Galilee are more your style, Kibutzs and moshavs in the area offer a delightful range of accomodation options, from the basic bed & breakfast to the ultra luxurious romantic getaway. Exclusive spa resorts and a good selection of quality hotels are also available.
Numerous festivals are held throughout the year, especially in the autumn and spring holiday seasons. The Acre(acco) Festival of Alternative Theater, The Olive harvest festival, and music festivals featuring Anglo-American folk, klezmer, Renaissance, and chamber music are just a few.
As in all areas of Israel, restaurants are a plenty!! Whatever your heart desires in the way of food, you will be able to find in the galilee.  The area prides itself on the incredible choice of cuisine available and has a number of food festivals throughout the year to promote its culinary delights, so be prepared to have your taste buds treated as royalty.
Church of the Holy ApostlesIf exploring the sites of Israel is on your list of must dos, rest assured you are in the right place! There are so many interesting sites that can be visited on a day trip from the Galilee as the Kineret played an important role in the early years of Christianity and has become a popular pilgrimage site for Christians.
The Galilee was the home of Jesus during at least thirty years of his life. The first three Gospels of the New Testament are chiefly an account of Jesus' public ministry in this province, particularly in the villages of Nazareth and Capernaum. The Galilee is cited as the place where Jesus cured a blind man. It was here that he walked on the water and the miracle of the loaves and the fishes happened in nearby Kfar Nakhum (Capernaum).
